By the time they are 18, most adults have 32 teeth. Most of the time, only 28 of the 32 teeth can fit. These four extra teeth, which are called wisdom teeth, are the last ones to come in. When wisdom teeth are impacted, they usually need to be taken out. When there isn't enough room for a wisdom tooth to grow in, it can grow at an angle, come out sideways, only partially break through the gum tissue, or stay completely buried under the gum and bone. This is called a "impacted" wisdom tooth.
Wisdom teeth need to be taken out when they can't come in properly because of something in the mouth. They can grow sideways, only partially come out of the gum, or stay stuck under the gum and bone. Impacted teeth can move around in the bone as they try to find a way to come out.
These teeth that aren't in the right place can cause a lot of trouble. When they are only partially out, the space around them lets bacteria grow, which can lead to an infection. Because of this, there is swelling, stiffness, pain, and sickness.
