Tooth extractions, or taking out one or more teeth, are usually only done as a last resort in dentistry, since it is best to keep the natural tooth in the mouth. Single or multiple extractions may be done for a number of reasons, such as a lot of tooth decay, impacted wisdom teeth, or the need to make room for orthodontic devices.
The most important short-term benefit of having a tooth pulled is that it stops hurting. If a tooth has a lot of decay or an infection, taking it out almost immediately makes the pain go away. But it should be noted that more steps are needed to replace the tooth that was pulled. Leaving a space is not a good idea because the other teeth will move out of place to fill it.
Your dentist will usually do everything they can to save your natural teeth. But sometimes, leaving a bad tooth in your mouth can cause pain or an infection that you don't need. If your tooth is badly decayed, broken, or stuck in your gum, it may need to be taken out. Before recommending this course of treatment, your doctor will talk you through your options and explain what will happen.
